what is sugaring?

Dating back to ancient Egypt and practiced for centuries in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Greece - Sugaring is the most gentle, natural, long-lasting treatment to eliminate unwanted hair from all areas of the body, and is accessible to all skin types, hair textures and skin sensitivities.

Using only 100% natural & biodegradable ingredients, Sugaring gently exfoliates dead skin cells and removes hair in it’s natural direction eliminating breakage and in-grown hairs making it possible to remove the hair as short as 1/16 inch.

This process is never hot, completely sanitary and starts to eliminate the hair follicle with frequent treatments leaving you smooth and hair free ~ Naturally.

BENEFITS OF SUGARING

SUGARING IS GENTLE

Sugaring is so gentle it can remove the vellus hair on some woman's faces and is safe for clients with sensitivities, eczema and psoriasis.

SANITARY

Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic sugar paste is applied with a gloved hand and a fresh ball of sugar paste is used on each client, meaning no risk of cross contamination.

LESS PAINFUL

Sugar will not stick to live skin cells, only dead skin cells are removed, so there is no risk of abrasion or tearing.

A BETTER TECHNIQUE

Sugar paste is applied against the direction of hair growth then removing the hair in the natural direction of growth, resulting in less painful hair removal and eliminating hair breakage.

NOT HOT

Sugar paste is lukewarm when it is applied, So there is no risk of burning the skin.

PULLS VERY SHORT HAIRS

Hair growth only needs to be 1/8 inch.

EASY TO CLEAN

Sugar paste dissolves easily with water leaving no sticky residue left on your skin.

our mission

Providing a safe(r) space where all bodies are respected.

Sugaring Brooklyn is a gender-affirming body positive salon founded by Natalie Venus De Hull licensed graduate of Aveda Institute of Cosmetology.

Sugaring Brooklyn offers a client intake form created by a certified occupational therapy assistant which gives clients an opportunity to share their preferred pronouns, sensory needs, trigger points, ticklishness, or any areas of concern that will help us make their experience the most beneficial and comfortable we can.

All services are booked and priced the same, regardless of gender identity. All genders are welcomed.

We celebrate all body types and don't hold others to an impossible beauty ideal. We encourage others to be their unique self and create their own standard.

FAQ

24-Hour Cancellation policy:

We understand, life can be unpredictable! You may cancel your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled service. However, late cancellations, lateness, and no shows will result in a cancellation fee of the full price of all services booked and the automatic 20% service fee. This will be charged to your credit card on file.

Running an inter-sectional space and providing equity for all our clients and employees, requires a herculean amount of resources. In order to stay in business for the people who need us, we have to be firm with the cancellation policy.

20% Automatic Service CHarge:

In order to provide predictable guaranteed wages at Sugaring Brooklyn for our employees, an automatic 20% service charge is applied to every appointment booked. For this reason we do not except tips. This also helps us streamline the check out process for each of our clients.

What if I need to reschedule/cancel my appointment?

You can cancel or reschedule appointments online (log into your profile) OR via text or email. Let us know your name, the date and time of your appointment and we will take it off the books. You can put yourself back into the schedule at your convenience online.

How long does my hair need to be?

The length of a grain of rice or long grain rice (if your hair is deeply rooted). Or half the size of your hair when you were waxing.

How should I prepare for my visit?

You may exfoliate legs if you aren’t regularly exfoliating that area. You can book a pre-care exfoliation for $10, otherwise, we will not be responsible for hairs trapped by skin.

No oils, lotions or deodorants. If you do this, it will require a pre-care cleanse which is a $5-15 charge.

What’s the difference?

New Client Intake vs. Consultation:

New Client Intake is mandatory for every client visiting for the first time. We have to conduct this intake for insurance purposes. We are unable to touch a client until they have gone through their initial intake.

Consultation: This is for appointments with over an hour and a half of services. This would be over the phone or on video chat. We would discuss what your goals are during the service.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Clean, comfortable and loose-fitting clothing. This way your freshly sugared skin won't get irritated. We may do a post-care treatment after your appointment, and you might want to keep product on your skin. The shop room can sometimes get chilly, we have blankets, but you can also bring cozy socks if you like. Feel free to bring your bathing suit so we can style your hair to match. In the summer some folks bring fresh clean clothes with them to change into, this helps prevent red bumps caused by exposure to bacteria.

What should I expect for my first visit?

Expect a thoughtful intake process in the form of a conversation. If you are booking for the first time please make sure to add *New Client Intake to your services!

What if there are hairs left behind?

Before you leave the sugaring room you should check in the long mirror and with the hand held mirror to make sure that you are happy with the results. Sometimes we leave hairs behind for specific reasons but we make it a policy to talk to you about why they were left behind. Either they were too short to pull or they were so deeply rooted that they were breaking. Ingrowns can be created from breakage so sometimes we leave those hairs for the next time we pull. Within 48 hours of your appointment you can always text us, so we can fit you in for a touch-up!

What should I do after my appointment/post care?

We will discuss a customized post/home care at your appointment. You can also tack on a post-care service to your appointment for extra treatment. We do have a basic three-step home care that we suggest to most people.

How long do I have to wait before having sex, going to the pool, EXERCISING, or going to the beach?

Your pores will be open for 12-24 hours after a sugaring service. Salt from sweat or sea water can cause irritation. Your pores are also more susceptible to bacteria than normal. Activities that introduce bacteria can cause red bumps or in some extreme cases infection. A good rule of thumb would be to wait 24 hours before any strenuous activities.

Armed with this knowledge and agency over your body, we trust you with your decisions.

What does home care look like?

The most basic home care is one that balances exfoliation with moisturizing.

1. A thoughtful cleanser

2. Scrub mitt

3. A bit of oil in the shower.

If additional moisture is needed we will recommend them based on your needs. All the products we recommend can be purchased in the shop or online at the website.

How Often should I be coming in?

We glorify body hair so timing depends on your personal needs, goals, and preferences.

To experience all the benefits of sugaring including hair refinement and less pain, come in when your hair is 1/8” or the length of a grain of rice. (waist DOWN we recommend 3-6 weeks, waist UP 1-4 weeks)

Can I shave between appointments?

You can do whatever you want with your body. However, if pain is a factor, you may not want to. Shaving in-between appointments will make your next sugaring process more intense. It will also throw off the rhythm we are creating together. We are happy to discuss your hair removal plans and process at your appointment.

What if I started my period?

There is nothing about your menstruation that interferes with the sugaring process. There is no need to apologize, it's natural! You don't even have to let us know, we'll figure it out. Keep in mind menstruation is never an exception for the 24-hr cancellation fee.

How do I make an appointment?

There are two ways to book an appointment.

  1. Online at www.sugaringbrooklyn.com Please book online if you’re a new client, we prefer you be the one who puts your card on file and your eyes that read the cancellation policy.

  2. We can always book your next appointment at your current appointment for a re-book discount (applied to your next visit). If you aren't sure about your schedule you can still book online. Remember your profile password!

If you aren't sure about your schedule you can always book online, last minute appointments are welcome! Don’t forget your profile password!

What's the difference between a bikini, bikini extended, and a brazilian?

  • A bikini is a 15 min service where we remove hair on either side of your thigh crease.

  • A bikini extended is all that plus your butt crack.

  • A brazilian is all the above plus your labia.

If you aren't sure what you are looking for you can add the consultation time to your appointment.

Why are your prices so high?

When comparing sugaring prices to waxing prices:

  • Sugaring yields a longer amount of time hair free, which means you come in less

  • We are on par with prices in the Midwest, while still being a luxury sugaring environment

We create fiscal equity by:

  • Offering a generous discount program that all folks can access as often or as little as they like

  • Making The Sugar Fund available for humans in need

What is the SugarFund?

The Sugar Fund is for folks of marginalized communities who make or hover at the poverty markers of our region. This includes but is not limited to: People of Color, LGBTQ, fat folks, disabled folks, sex workers, and folks for which these identities intersect.

The Sugar Fund is a fund that both Sugaring Brooklyn and our customers donate to in order to make Sugaring services more accessible for folks who can’t afford them. Many of our trans and or disabled clients require hair removal services to exist in the world comfortably, and we like to be able to provide those services to them. We ask our clients who pay full price if they’d like to contribute, and our ownership donates 10% of every week’s profit to the fund. This fund can pay for up to 50% of services for folks in need.

We ask that if you do not identify as a part of any of these groups, or if you do and make/earn/receive over $35,000 per year that you do not ask to access the Sugar Fund.

To donate to the Sugar Fund you can click the button below.
